Người đến một thành xứ Samari, tên là Xykha, gần thửa đất ông Giacóp đã cho con là ông Giuse. Ở đấy, có giếng của ông Giacóp. Người đi đường mỏi mệt, nên ngồi ngay xuống bờ giếng. Lúc đó vào khoảng mười hai giờ trưa.

Có một người phụ nữ Samari đến lấy nước. Ðức Giêsu nói với người ấy: "Chị cho tôi xin chút nước uống!" Quả thế, các môn đệ của Người đã vào thành mua thức ăn. Người phụ nữ Samari liền nói: "Ông là người Dothái, mà lại xin tôi, một phụ nữ Samari, cho ông nước uống sao?" Quả thế, người Dothái không được giao thiệp với nguòi Samari. Ðức Giêsu trả lời:

"Nếu chị nhận ra ân huệ Thiên Chúa ban, và ai là người nói với chị: "Cho tôi chút nước uống", thì hẳn chị đã xin, và người ấy ban cho chị nước hằng sống".

Chị ấy nói: "Thưa ông, ông không có gầu, mà giếng lại sâu. Vậy ông lấy đâu ra nước hằng sống? Chẳng lẽ ông lớn hơn tổ phụ Giacóp chúng tôi, là người đã cho chúng tôi giếng này? Chính Người đã uống giếng này, cả con cháu và đàn gia súc của Người cũng vậy". Ðức Giêsu trả lời:

"Ai uống nước này, sẽ lại khát. Còn ai uống nước tôi cho, sẽ không bao giờ khát nữa. Và nước tôi cho sẽ trở thành nơi người ấy một mạch nước vọt lên, đem lại sự sống đời đời".

Người phụ nữ nói với Ðức Giêsu: "Thưa ông, xin ông cho tôi thứ nước ấy, để tôi hết khát và khỏi phải đến đây lấy nước". Người bảo chị ấy: "Chị hãy gọi chồng chị, rồi trở lại đây". Người phụ nữ đáp: "Tôi không có chồng". Ðức Giêsu bảo: "Chị nói: 'Tôi không có chồng' là phải, vì chị đã năm đời chồng rồi, và hiện người đang sống với chị không phải là chồng chị. Chị đã nói đúng". Người phụ nữ nói với Người: "Thưa ông, tôi thấy ông thật là một ngôn sứ... Cha ông chúng tôi đã thờ phượng Thiên Chúa trên núi này; còn các ông lại bảo: Giêrusalem mới chính là nơi thờ phượng Thiên Chúa". Ðức Giêsu phán:

"Này chị, hãy tin tôi: đã đến giờ các người sẽ thờ phượng Chúa Cha,

không phải trên núi này hay tại Giêrusalem. Các người thờ Ðấng các người không biết; còn chúng tôi thờ Ðấng chúng tôi biết, vì ơn cứu độ phát xuất từ dân Dothái. Nhưng giờ đã đến - và chính lúc này đây giờ những người thờ phượng đích thực sẽ thờ phượng Chúa Cha trong thần khí và sự thật, vì Chúa Cha tìm kiếm những ai thờ phượng Người như thế. Thiên Chúa là thần khí, và những kẻ thờ phượng Người phải thờ phượng trong thần khí và sự thật".

Người phụ nữ thưa: "Tôi biết Ðấng Mêsia, gọi là Ðức Kitô, sẽ đến. Khi Người đến, Người sẽ loan báo cho chúng tôi mọi sự". Ðức Giêsu nói: "Ðấng ấy chính là tôi, người đang nói với chị đây".

Vừa lúc đó, các môn đệ trở về. Các ông ngạc nhiên vì thấy Người nói chuyện với một phụ nữ. Tuy thế, không ai dám hỏi: "Thầy cần gì vậy?" Hoặc "Thầy nói gì với chị ấy?" Người phụ nữ để vò nước lại, vào thành và nói với người ta: "Ðến mà xem: có một người đã nói với tôi tất cả những gì tôi đã làm. Ông ấy không phải là Ðấng Kitô sao?" Họ ra khỏi thành và đến gặp Người.

Trong khi đó, các môn đệ thưa với Người rằng: "Rápbi, xin mời Thầy dùng bữa". Người nói với các ông: "Thầy phải dùng một thứ lương thực mà anh em không biết". Các môn đệ mới hỏi nhau: "Ðã có ai mang thức ăn đến cho Thầy rồi chăng?" Ðức Giêsu nói với các ông:

"Lương thực của Thầy là thi hành ý muốn của Ðấng đã sai Thầy, và hoàn tất công trình của Người. Nào anh em chẳng nói: Còn bốn tháng nữa mới đến mùa gặt? Nhưng này, Thầy bảo anh em: Ngước mắt lên mà xem, đồng lúa đã chín vàng đang chờ ngày gặt hái! Ai gặt thì lãnh tiền công và thu hoa lợi để được sống muôn đời, và như thế, cả người gieo lẫn kẻ gặt đều hớn hở vui mừng. Thật vậy, câu tục ngữ "kẻ này gieo, người kia gặt" quả là đúng! Thầy sai anh em đi gặt những gì chính anh em đã không phải vất vả làm ra. Người khác đã làm lụng vất vả; còn anh em, anh em được vào hưởng kết quả công lao của họ".

Có nhiều người Samari trong thành đó đã tin vào Ðức Giêsu, vì lời người phụ nữ làm chứng: ông ấy nói với tôi mọi việc tôi đã làm. Vậy, khi đến gặp Người, dân Samari xin Người ở lại với họ, và Người đã ở lại đó hai ngày. Số người tin vì lời Ðức Giêsu nói còn đông hơn nữa. Họ bảo người phụ nữ: "Không còn phải vì lời chị kể mà chúng tôi tin. Quả thật, chính chúng tôi đã nghe và biết rằng Người thật là Ðấng cứu độ trần gian".

JOHN 4,5-42.

On the way he came to the Samaritan town called Sychar near the land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there and Jesus, tired by the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Give me something to drink.' His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew. How is it that you ask me, a Samaritan, for something to drink?' -- Jews, of course, do not associate with Samaritans. Jesus replied to her:

If you only knew what God is offering and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me something to drink,' you would have been the one to ask, and he would have given you living water. 'You have no bucket, sir,' she answered, 'and the well is deep: how do you get this living water? Are you a greater man than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself with his sons and his cattle?' Jesus replied: 

Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again; but no one who drinks the water that I shall give will ever be thirsty again: the water that I shall give will become a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life. 'Sir,' said the woman, 'give me some of that water, so that I may never be thirsty or come here again to draw water.' 'Go and call your husband,' said Jesus to her, 'and come back here.' The woman answered, 'I have no husband.' Jesus said to her, 'You are right to say, "I have no husband"; for although you have had five, the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth there.' 'I see you are a prophet, sir,' said the woman. 'Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, though you say that Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.' Jesus said:

Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know; for salvation comes from the Jews. But the hour is coming -- indeed is already here -- when true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth: that is the kind of worshipper the Father seeks. God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to him, 'I know that Messiah -- that is, Christ -- is coming; and when he comes he will explain everything.' Jesus said, 'That is who I am, I who speak to you.' At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, though none of them asked, 'What do you want from her?' or, 'What are you talking to her about?' The woman put down her water jar and hurried back to the town to tell the people, 'Come and see a man who has told me everything I have done; could this be the Christ?' This brought people out of the town and they made their way towards him. Meanwhile, the disciples were urging him, 'Rabbi, do have something to eat'; but he said, 'I have food to eat that you do not know about.' So the disciples said to one another, 'Has someone brought him food?' But Jesus said: My food is to do the will of the one who sent me, and to complete his work. Do you not have a saying: Four months and then the harvest? Well, I tell you, look around you, look at the fields; already they are white, ready for harvest! Already the reaper is being paid his wages, already he is bringing in the grain for eternal life, so that sower and reaper can rejoice together. For here the proverb holds true: one sows, another reaps; I sent you to reap a harvest you have not laboured for. Others have laboured for it; and you have come into the rewards of their labour. Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the woman's words of testimony, 'He told me everything I have done.' So, when the Samaritans came up to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed for two days, and many more came to believe on the strength of the words he spoke to them; and they said to the woman, 'Now we believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heard him ourselves and we know that he is indeed the Saviour of the world.'

Il arrive donc à une ville de Samarie appelée Sychar, près de la terre que Jacob avait donnée à son fils Joseph. Là se trouvait le puits de Jacob. Jésus, fatigué par la marche, se tenait donc assis près du puits. C'était environ la sixième heure. Une femme de Samarie vient pour puiser de l'eau. Jésus lui dit: "Donne-moi à boire." Ses disciples en effet s'en étaient allés à la ville pour acheter de quoi manger. La femme samaritaine lui dit: "Comment! toi qui es Juif, tu me demandes à boire à moi qui suis une femme samaritaine?" (Les Juifs en effet n'ont pas de relations avec les Samaritains.) Jésus lui répondit:

"Si tu savais le don de Dieu et qui est celui qui te dit: Donne-moi à boire, c'est toi qui l'aurais prié et il t'aurait donné de l'eau vive." Elle lui dit: "Seigneur, tu n'as rien pour puiser, et le puits est profond. D'où l'as-tu donc, l'eau vive? Serais-tu plus grand que notre père Jacob, qui nous a donné ce puits et y a bu lui-même, ainsi que ses fils et ses bêtes?" Jésus lui répondit: "Quiconque boit de cette eau aura soif à nouveau; mais qui boira de l'eau que je lui donnerai n'aura plus jamais soif; l'eau que je lui donnerai deviendra en lui source d'eau jaillissant en vie éternelle." La femme lui dit: "Seigneur, donne-moi cette eau, afin que je n'aie plus soif et ne vienne plus ici pour puiser." Il lui dit: "Va, appelle ton mari et reviens ici." La femme lui répondit: "Je n'ai pas de mari." Jésus lui dit: "Tu as bien fait de dire: Je n'ai pas de mari, car tu as eu cinq maris et celui que tu as maintenant n'est pas ton mari; en cela tu dis vrai." La femme lui dit: "Seigneur, je vois que tu es un prophète... Nos pères ont adoré sur cette montagne et vous, vous dites: C'est à Jérusalem qu'est le lieu où il faut adorer." Jésus lui dit: "Crois-moi, femme, l'heure vient où ce n'est ni sur cette montagne ni à Jérusalem que vous adorerez le Père. Vous, vous adorez ce que vous ne connaissez pas; nous, nous adorons ce que nous connaissons, car le salut vient des Juifs. Mais l'heure vient - et c'est maintenant - où les véritables adorateurs adoreront le Père dans l'esprit et la vérité, car tels sont les adorateurs que cherche le Père. Dieu est esprit, et ceux qui adorent, c'est dans l'esprit et la vérité qu'ils doivent adorer." La femme lui dit: "Je sais que le Messie doit venir, celui qu'on appelle Christ. Quand il viendra, il nous expliquera tout." Jésus lui dit: "Je le suis, moi qui te parle." Là-dessus arrivèrent ses disciples, et ils s'étonnaient qu'il parlât à une femme. Pourtant pas un ne dit: "Que cherches-tu?" Ou: "De quoi lui parles-tu?" La femme alors laissa là sa cruche, courut à la ville et dit aux gens: "Venez voir un homme qui m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait. Ne serait-il pas le Christ?" Ils sortirent de la ville et ils se dirigeaient vers lui. Entre-temps, les disciples le priaient, en disant: "Rabbi, mange." Mais il leur dit: "J'ai à manger un aliment que vous ne connaissez pas." Les disciples se disaient entre eux: "Quelqu'un lui aurait-il apporté à manger?" Jésus leur dit: "Ma nourriture est de faire la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé et de mener son oeuvre à bonne fin. Ne dites-vous pas: Encore quatre mois et vient la moisson? Eh bien! je vous dis: Levez les yeux et regardez les champs, ils sont blancs pour la moisson. Déjà le moissonneur reçoit son salaire et récolte du fruit pour la vie éternelle, en sorte que le semeur se réjouit avec le moissonneur. Car ici se vérifie le dicton: autre est le semeur, autre le moissonneur: je vous ai envoyés moissonner là où vous ne vous êtes pas fatigués; d'autres se sont fatigués et vous, vous héritez de leurs fatigues." Un bon nombre de Samaritains de cette ville crurent en lui à cause de la parole de la femme, qui attestait: "Il m'a dit tout ce que j'ai fait." Quand donc ils furent arrivés près de lui, les Samaritains le prièrent de demeurer chez eux. Il y demeura deux jours et ils furent bien plus nombreux à croire, à cause de sa parole, et ils disaient à la femme: "Ce n'est plus sur tes dires que nous croyons; nous l'avons nous-mêmes entendu et nous savons que c'est vraiment lui le sauveur du monde."
