VUA HÊ-RÔ-ĐÊ VÀ ĐỨC GIÊSU.

Tin mừng Chúa GiêSu KiTô theo Thánh Mác-Cô, chương 6, đoạn từ câu (14) đến câu (29). 

Vua Hêrôđê nghe biết về Ðức Giêsu, vì Người đã nổi danh. Có kẻ nói: "Ðó là ông Gioan Tẩy Giả từ cõi chết chỗi dậy, nên quyền làm phép lạ mới tác động nơi ông." Ðó là một ngôn sứ như một trong các ngôn sứ". Kẻ khác nói: "Ðó là ông Êlia". Kẻ khác nữa lại nói: "Ðó là một ngôn sứ như một trong các ngôn sứ". Vua Hêrôđê nghe thế, liền nói: "Ông Gioan, ta đã cho chém đầu, chính ông đã chỗi dậy!" 

Số là vua Hêrôđã sai đi bắt ông Gioan và xiềng ông trong ngục. Lý do là vì vua đã lấy bà Hêrôđia, vợ của người anh là Philípphê, mà ông Gioan lại bảo: "Ngài không được phép lấy vợ của anh ngài !" Bà Hêrôđia căm thù ông Gioan và muốn giết ông, nhưng không được. Thật vậy, vua Hêrôđê nể sợ ông Gioan vì biết ông là người công chính thánh thiện; vua che chở ông. Khi nghe ông nói, nhà vua rất phân vân, nhưng lại cứ thích nghe. 

Một ngày thuận lợi đến: nhân dịp mừng sinh nhật của mình, vua Hêrôđê mở tiệc thết đãi bá quan văn võ và các thân hào miền Galilê. Con gái bà Hêrôđia vào biểu diễn một điệu vũ, làm cho nhà vua và khách dư tiệc vui thích. Nhà vua nói với cô gái: "Con muốn gì thì cứ xin, ta sẽ ban cho con". Vua lại còn thề: "Con xin gì, ta cũng cho, dù một nửa nước của ta cũng được." Cô gái đi ra hỏi mẹ: "Con nên xin gì đây?" Mẹ cô nói: "Ðầu Gioan Tẩy Giả". Lập tức cô vội trở vào đến bên nhà vua và xin rằng: "Con muốn ngài ban ngay cho con cái đầu ông Gioan Tẩy Giả, đặt trên mâm".

Nhà vua buồn lắm, nhưng vì lời thề, và khách dự tiệc, nên không muốn thất hứa với cô. Lập tức, vua sai thị vệ đi và truyền mang đầu ông Gioan tới. Thị vệ ra đi, chặt đầu ông ở trong ngục, bưng đầu ông trên một cái mân trao cho cô gái, và cô gái trao cho mẹ. Nghe tin ấy, môn đệ đến lấy thi hài ông và đặt trong một ngôi mộ.

MARK 6,14-29.

King Herod had heard about him, since by now his name was well known. Some were saying, 'John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.' Others said, 'He is Elijah,' others again, 'He is a prophet, like the prophets we used to have.' But when Herod heard this he said, 'It is John whose head I cut off; he has risen from the dead.'

Now it was this same Herod who had sent to have John arrested, and had had him chained up in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife whom he had married. For John had told Herod, 'It is against the law for you to have your brother's wife.' As for Herodias, she was furious with him and wanted to kill him, but she was not able to do so, because Herod was in awe of John, knowing him to be a good and upright man, and gave him his protection. When he had heard him speak he was greatly perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him. 

An opportunity came on Herod's birthday when he gave a banquet for the nobles of his court, for his army officers and for the leading figures in Galilee. When the daughter of this same Herodias came in and danced, she delighted Herod and his guests; so the king said to the girl, 'Ask me anything you like and I will give it you.' And he swore her an oath, 'I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom.' She went out and said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for?' She replied, 'The head of John the Baptist.' The girl at once rushed back to the king and made her request, 'I want you to give me John the Baptist's head, immediately, on a dish.'

The king was deeply distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he was reluctant to break his word to her. At once the king sent one of the bodyguard with orders to bring John's head. The man went off and beheaded him in the prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When John's disciples heard about this, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

MARC 6,14-29.

Le roi Hérode entendit parler de lui, car son nom était devenu célèbre, et l'on disait: "Jean le Baptiste est ressuscité d'entre les morts; d'où les pouvoirs miraculeux qui se déploient en sa personne." D'autres disaient: "C'est Elie." Et d'autres disaient: "C'est un prophète comme les autres prophètes." Hérode donc, en ayant entendu parler, disait: "C'est Jean que j'ai fait décapiter, qui est ressuscité!"

En effet, c'était lui, Hérode, qui avait envoyé arrêter Jean et l'enchaîner en prison, à cause d'Hérodiade, la femme de Philippe son frère qu'il avait épousée. Car Jean disait à Hérode: "Il ne t'est pas permis d'avoir la femme de ton frère." Quant à Hérodiade, elle était acharnée contre lui et voulait le tuer, mais elle ne le pouvait pas, parce que Hérode craignait Jean, sachant que c'était un homme juste et saint, et il le protégeait; quand il l'avait entendu, il était fort perplexe, et c'était avec plaisir qu'il l'écoutait.

Or vint un jour propice, quand Hérode, à l'anniversaire de sa naissance, fit un banquet pour les grands de sa cour, les officiers et les principaux personnages de la Galilée: la fille de la dite Hérodiade entra et dansa, et elle plut à Hérode et aux convives. Alors le roi dit à la jeune fille: "Demande-moi ce que tu voudras, je te le donnerai." Et il lui fit un serment: "Tout ce que tu me demanderas, je te le donnerai, jusqu'à la moitié de mon royaume!" Elle sortit et dit à sa mère: "Que vais-je demander" - "La tête de Jean le Baptiste", dit celle-ci. Rentrant aussitôt en hâte auprès du roi, elle lui fit cette demande: "Je veux que tout de suite tu me donnes sur un plat la tête de Jean le Baptiste." 

Le roi fut très contristé, mais à cause de ses serments et des convives, il ne voulut pas lui manquer de parole. Et aussitôt le roi envoya un garde en lui ordonnant d'apporter la tête de Jean. Le garde s'en alla et le décapita dans la prison; puis il apporta sa tête sur un plat et la donna à la jeune fille, et la jeune fille la donna à sa mère. Les disciples de Jean, l'ayant appris, vinrent prendre son cadavre et le mirent dans un tombeau.
